Where is Gordon Taylor’s PFA review? No doubt he’s beavering away | Marina Hyde

20-02-2019

The world’s highest-paid union official promised a review in November but it appears to be moving at a glacial paceI don’t know the Latin for “look busy and it’ll die down” – but whatever it is, it could do with being carved above the lintel of the Professional Footballers’ Association’s office in Manchester. This is the stronghold of the organisation’s chief executive Gordon Taylor, who has been in charge for just the 40 years so far. That is slightly shy of someone like Cameroonian dictator Paul Biya, who has notched up 43 years of tireless service to his subjects. But as far as comparisons with other bosses in the humanitarian sector are concerned, there’s really no one to remotely touch him in terms of longevity. Certainly not since Mother Teresa left us. Football transfer rumours: Stoke to offload Saido Berahino after arrest?

20-02-2019

Today’s fluff is here, at leastTottenham Hotspur are planning to abandon their recent policy of not signing any new players by dipping into the market next summer. A spanking new defender is high on Mauricio Pochettino’s shopping list and the name of Real Betis’s Aïssa Mandi is being named in dispatches. A right-back who can fill in at centre-back if required, the 27-year-old Algerian international is also inching his way across Arsenal’s radar.According to reports in Spain, Unai Emery is also interested in signing Éver Banega from Sevilla. The reformed party boy is a firm favourite of Arsenal’s Spanish manager, who coached him at both Valencia and Sevilla, and more recently tried unsuccessfully to bring him to the Emirates in January. Contracted to Sevilla until 2020, the 30-year-old Argentinian midfielder is valued at about £17m. Continue reading...

Matija Nastasic: ‘I told Pellegrini it was better for everyone if I left City’

20-02-2019

The defender’s career in Manchester ended in frustration but he has flourished at Schalke and is confident his current side can upset his old one in their Champions League meetingIt is with matter-of-fact delivery, rather than obvious emotion or regret, that Matija Nastasic recounts the meeting that in effect brought about his departure from Manchester City. He had made a rapid impact after arriving from Fiorentina as a 19-year-old in 2012 but, two and a half years on, had fallen off Manuel Pellegrini’s radar with no obvious explanation bar some niggling injuries he had long since overcome.“I was thinking a lot: ‘What is the problem?’” he says. “After some time I spoke with Pellegrini and he explained I had to wait for my chance. In the end there were not so many opportunities to play. There was no issue between us but I couldn’t understand why it was like that and told him that I felt I could help the team more, that I should have more playing time at that moment and that, if it was not possible at City, then it would be better for everybody that I changed club.” Continue reading...

England chase 361 to beat West Indies after Gayle blitz: first ODI – live!

20-02-2019

Updates from the first ODI in BarbadosYou can email Daniel or tweet @DanielHarrisThe Spin: Questions facing England ahead of the World Cup 8.34pm GMT 14th over: England 113-1 (Roy 67, Root 6) Target 361 I suppose West Indies have slowed the rate slightly, but I’m still a little surprised that Nurse hasn’t had a go at Root before he gets his feet moving. He looks really controlled out there, nudging a single as Roy responds with two, then Roy grows bored and slashes one that flies behind the stumps for four. 8.30pm GMT 13th over: England 105-1 (Roy 60, Root 5) Target 361 Roy top-edges a poll, but sees it drop short of midwicket. Gayle, meanwhile, is back on the pitch, and after a single to Root is quickly slow to cut off Roy’s tap to midwicket so they run one more. Two more singles ensue. Continue reading...

Matti Nykänen, the Flying Finn who fell so far, so fast | Andy Bull

20-02-2019

The ski-jumper, who won five Olympic medals, had an otherworldly talent but not the sense, or support, he needed to cope with the fame it won himMatti Nykänen used to fly so far, so fast that it felt as if he would never come down. When the Finn broke the world ski jump record for the fifth, and final, time at Planica in 1985 he was moving so quickly that the cameraman struggled to track him through the air.Watching the footage you wonder if he might disappear into the yonder off the far side of the screen. In those days, the mid-1980s, Nykänen was the best ski jumper in the world and almost unbeatable. The records were the least of it. He won five world titles, five Olympic medals, including three golds in one Games, and four World Cups. Continue reading...
