The NFL's Kaepernick settlement should just be the start of making amends | Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

20-02-2019

Hopefully the league can now support the values of the US constitution rather than pandering to those who mistake parochialism for patriotismIn one of my favorite sports movies, Vision Quest, the varsity wrestling coach tells his students they can challenge the best wrestler in any weight class if they want to take his place.“Fairest thing in the world,” he smugly tells them. As soon as one kid raises his hand to make that challenge, the coach quickly dismisses the team, pulls him aside, and says: “You’re out of your mind!” Continue reading...

Chelsea stick with Maurizio Sarri for now but manager on thin ice

20-02-2019

• Sarri to take charge against Malmö and Manchester City• Roman Abramovich will decide whether to sack ItalianMaurizio Sarri will take charge of Chelsea’s Europa League tie at home against Malmö on Thursday and is set to continue as manager for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday, although another defeat by Pep Guardiola’s side at Wembley could lead to his dismissal. The 6-0 loss at City this month and the embarrassing FA Cup exit against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Monday that prompted home supporters to turn on the Italian have left Sarri clinging to his job after less than a season. The 60-year-old was given a month for results to improve after the defeat at the Etihad Stadium, and the 2-1 win against Malmö in the first leg of their last-32 tie last week offered some respite. But that proved brief given the performance against United and the reaction of large numbers of Chelsea’s supporters, who chanted “Fuck Sarri-ball” and eventually joined in with the United fans’ refrain of: “You’re getting sacked in the morning.” Continue reading...

Eoin Morgan expects West Indies to put England’s dominance to the test

20-02-2019

• England highly favoured before 50-over series begins• Captain looking to fine-tune in run-up to World CupThe Kensington Oval has already chewed up and spat out the concept of favourites and underdogs on this Caribbean tour, so while Eoin Morgan’s England one-day side appear to be very much the former going into Wednesday’s series opener against West Indies, the captain remains distinctly wary.England’s 50-over side are a different beast from their Test equivalents, of course, sitting top of the rankings and entering a fine-tuning mode ahead of a World Cup they are fancied to win. West Indies, meanwhile, are eighth in the ladder, squeaking into this summer’s tournament via qualifying, and it is over four years since they last emerged victorious in a one-day series by beating Bangladesh at home. Jarrell Miller can’t beat me even on his best day, says Anthony Joshua

20-02-2019

• UK fighter says outspoken American is ‘jealous’ of him• ‘He’s slow, he’s not a puncher ... I can’t really respect that’So much of the early buildup to Anthony Joshua’s forthcoming defence of the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles has centred on those the British champion will not be fighting on 1 June at Madison Square Garden instead of on Brooklyn’s Jarrell Miller. That is more than fine with Joshua, who understands that fans would rather be served a long-awaited summit meeting with Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury than Miller, an unfancied former kickboxer who has been installed as a 5-1 underdog in the contest.“My view on the whole situation is they’ll appreciate you when you’re done,” Joshua said on Tuesday at the Garden. “So right now I’m just going with where the best opportunities are and I’m making the right decisions for the long term. I’ll beat up Jarrell Miller, and what that then does help me do is say to Wilder: ‘Look, if you don’t want want to come to the UK, you’ve seen what we’ve done in the US, so let’s work on having it here on both of our terms.’” Continue reading...
