Enable staying in training for historic Arc bid is a gamble for her owner

20-11-2018

Prince Khalid Abdullah’s decision means the 2019 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe promises to be a race to savourFor some, perhaps many, punters and racegoers, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s decision to race on with Enable in search of an unprecedented third success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, which was announced on Monday morning, will seem like one of the easiest imaginable. Who would not want to see her on the track as a mature five-year-old mare, taking on old foes like Sea Of Class and fresh ones from a 2018 juvenile crop that looked distinctly above-average? With one historic achievement already secured with victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, why stop there? But decisions like this can always look straightforward when it is not your money and you have nothing to lose. In truth, it is a very sporting decision by an owner who has always seemed to take as much pleasure from breeding as he has from racing, and there are some good reasons why Prince Khalid could have chosen to stick rather than gamble on another season on the track. Great golf duels, quick pitstops and sticking it up the punter | Classic YouTube

20-11-2018

This week’s roundup also features propelling things at targets and narrowly avoiding being trampled1) It’s Tiger Woods v Phil Mickelson nonsense next week, which means an ideal time to look back at some maverick and even random golf matches. Here’s Tiger v Sergio in the Battle at Bighorn (2000), Seve v Jack in the Toyota Challenge of Champions (1986) and Ben Hogan v Sam Snead (1965). Then Skins … at Wentworth in 1988, Walton Heath in 1991, Lee Trevino at PGA West (1987) and Woods, again, at the Memorial Skins in 2009. And how about the $18,000 Putt-Putt Skins Game – 1989 edition and then 1992? And how could we possibly forget a famous 1964 duel at Stoke Park?2) Ferrari didn’t keep Sebastian Vettel waiting in the pits for his second stop at last weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix – he was on his way again after an incredible 1.97 secs. Yet it’s still not the fastest ever. The pit lane ballet isn’t always so well choreographed, however. And beware: tyre jack. Continue reading...

Ireland defeat could be pre-World Cup tipping point for All Blacks

20-11-2018

This loss may not prove to be such a good thing for rugby for simple reason New Zealand are going to get better because of itWhen I was playing for the All Blacks we would always talk about making sure that after the November series we did not have “a stone under the beach towel” during the off-season. Make no mistake, the New Zealand coaches and players have rocks under theirs now.Having said that, regardless of what Steve Hansen says, New Zealand are still the best team in the world and they are the favourites for next year’s World Cup. Yes, the gap has been closed a significant amount but the big question is whether the All Blacks should be panicking now, and I still think the answer is no. All credit to Ireland, they deserved their fantastic victory and they are being widely congratulated and rightly so, but I wonder if it does prove to be such a good thing for the world of rugby for the simple reason that the All Blacks are going to get better because of it. Cheltenham Festival glory and tragedy: Campbell Gillies and Brindisi Breeze

20-11-2018

In an extract from Chris Cook’s new book Three Of A Kind: The Scudamores, the trainer Peter, his partner, Lucinda Russell, and Campbell Gillies’ mother Lesley talk about the double tragedy that befell the jockey and his Cheltenham winnerIn March 2012, Brindisi Breeze won the Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle, a first training success at the Cheltenham Festival for Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore. For the wider world, it was an introduction to the winning jockey, Campbell Gillies. Appallingly, both horse and jockey had died by midsummer. Peter Scudamore: He had a spaniel-like charm, Campbell. We love spaniels because they’re always puppies. He had that charm that almost made him a surrogate son to us. You could never really get cross with Campbell. He was never infuriating. He knew his boundaries with his humour, it was just joy of life. He’d ride out in little short, pink wellingtons. Why? I never found out. Continue reading...

The Fiver | The Nations League and a prolonged bout of unhatched egg-counting

20-11-2018

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! When Uefa commissioned an anthem for the Nations League it hoped to “capture the unity of the supporters, plus the importance of the competition”. It might also have proved quite popular with “the kids”. After all, co-composer Giorgio Tuinfort previously had a hand in songs recorded by David Guetta, Britney Spears and Rihanna, as well as Gwen Stefani’s wildly successful and even more grating The Sweet Escape. This one, though, would turn out rather different, partly because it doesn’t feature Akon or Ne-Yo, but mainly because all but three words are in Latin. “Dies venit, o, dies luxit, The Nations League!” it concludes, confusingly.
